Rheem was founded in 1925 by the Rheem brothers, Richard and Donald. They originally manufactured water heater boiler units before venturing into making furnaces and eventually air conditioners. They also purchased Rudd in 1960 and manufacture under that brand name as well.
Throughout the years, the Rheem Company has been involved in a variety of applications, including heating and cooling products, water heaters, pool heaters and refrigeration products. They built most of their reputation as a water heater company, but most people know them for their heating and cooling units.
Rheem has had “so-so” reputation with their air conditioners. They use a specific zig-zag coil design in their A/C units, which according to some cooling repair professionals, can be problematic causing the coils to freeze up and making it difficult to clean. However, where they may lack in their air conditioners, they make up for it with their furnaces.
