Surprisingly, the York brand has been around longer than the Carrier company. York was started in 1874 as as a manufacturing company that specialized in ice making machines, 28 years before Willis Carrier founded his company. In 1914, they started to expand their refrigeration technology into air conditioning using a technique called “air washing”. This technique was used to manufacture a cooling system for an entire office building as well as the Empire State Building.
York brand heating and cooling systems are fairly reliable and are a great “middle-of-the-road” HVAC system for your home or office. York is manufactured by Johnson Controls, who also produce parts for Luxaire, Coleman and Champion who’s brands are identical to York making repairs on any of these brands fairly seamless. York branded air conditioners have had some issues in the past with their micro-channel coil that was prone to leaking, however, since upgrades were made in recent years, leaks have decreased and durability has improved.
